Communication Center- Dissertation Accelerator

The Dissertation Accelerator is open to all currently enrolled GT doctoral students actively working on their dissertations, at any stage of the process. The Accelerator provides students with structured time to write, accountability to help them meet their goals, community to support them through the process, and access to workshops that provide them with tools and strategies for completing the dissertation. The Accelerator is not a writing course and it does not provide writing instruction to students. Students should be prepared to write independently for ~20 hours during the Accelerator week.

We host an Accelerator at the end of each fall and spring semester and offer both in-person and remote options for participation. In-person participation is limited and priority is given to students who have not previously participated in an Accelerator in person and who fit the focus of the event, which changes based on the term.

  • Fall Focus: students in the final stages of the dissertation (graduating in May)
  • Spring Focus: students just beginning the process (proposal stage or first chapter/section)

The Spring 2022 Dissertation Accelerator will take place May 2nd-6th from 10am-5pm daily with both in-person and remote options for participation. Space is limited for in-person participation and will be determined based on where students are in the dissertation process, previous participation, and registration order. This Accelerator is designed for early-stage dissertation writers who are working on proposals or first chapters. PhD Candidates at any stage are welcome to participate remotely. All participants should be prepared to attend all sessions. Registrants will receive detailed information about the Accelerator one week prior to the event (including whether or not they are invited to participate in person).

Registration will open for the Spring 2022 Accelerator in early April.

Call for Applications – Interdisciplinary PhD Workshop in Sustainable Development 2022 at Columbia University

Dear all,

Columbia University’s Sustainable Development Doctoral Society is pleased to announce the thirteenth Interdisciplinary PhD Workshop in Sustainable Development (IPWSD), to be held in an hybrid format on April 8th-9th, 2022.

The workshop is targeted towards PhD candidates working on the intersection of human and natural systems who seek feedback on their research. We encourage contributions from a wide range of fields including environmental economics, science and policy, climate impacts, natural resource management, energy systems, public health, among others. IPWSD provides a platform of discussion for an interdisciplinary audience of emerging researchers. In the past, participants have included students from university departments in economics, earth and environmental sciences, ecology, political science, engineering, epidemiology, sociology, and geography. Additionally, the Sustainable Development Doctoral Society is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community and we encourage applications from underrepresented groups in economics, the natural sciences, and related fields.

Participants should expect to present for 15–20 minutes with plenty of room for discussion. Students in the dissertation stage of their PhD will be given priority for presentation slots, though advanced masters students and post-docs are also encouraged to apply. We also invite students who do not wish to present but who are likely to provide valuable feedback to presenters to apply to be part of the audience. Workshop participants are expected to cover their travel and lodging expenses if they choose to attend in person, but there is no fee for participating in the event and light breakfast & lunches will be provided.

Please submit your application by filling the online application form no later than Friday, February 11th, 2022.  All applicants will be notified of the final decision regarding their application by late February, 2022. If you have any questions, please visit our website or contact us at cu.sdds.ipwsd@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you this spring!
