The Novelis Innovation Hub at Georgia Tech is pleased to announce the launch of the Novelis Scholars Program for the 2023 calendar year. Nominations are sought from top graduate students conducting
research in various aspects of sustainability (carbon footprint/energy/water/waste reduction etc.),
techno-economics of circularity, high-throughput materials discovery, surface functionalization, and AI/data science applications in materials/manufacturing/supply chains. As a global leader in innovative
aluminum products and services, and as the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, championing the vision of a circular economy, Novelis has partnered with Georgia Tech to collaborate on R&D and promote
education of the next generation of engineers and scientists dedicated to building better products and innovative materials and manufacturing processes for a more sustainable world.

Purpose
• Catalyze and cultivate excellence in graduate level research in strategic growth areas relevant to Novelis and Georgia Tech.
• Connect top students and their thesis advisors with Novelis scientists and engineers to learn about their research and explore collaboration and engagement opportunities.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
• Open to graduate students whose thesis research is focused on one of the following areas of iinterest to Novelis: 1) Sustainable design, processes, and business practices, 2) High-throughput materials discovery, 3) Surface functionalization/modification technologies, and 4) AI/Data
Science applications in materials/manufacturing/supply chains.
• Emphasis on research and academic excellence.
• Students who enhance diversity and inclusion initiatives at Georgia Tech.

Recognition
• Graduate Scholars: $8,000 annual award (in monthly stipends) for the 2023 Calendar Year
• “Spend a day at NGRTC”
-Present a Novelis Scholar Invited Lecture on research accomplishments during the year of the award to Novelis R&D Scientists and Engineers at the Novelis Global Research &
Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, GA
-NGRTC Lab Tour
-Opportunity to interact with Novelis leadership, and scientists and engineers working on Novelis’ R&D initiatives for real-world challenges
• Possible tour of Novelis aluminum recycling and manufacturing facilities in GA and KY

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

Ford Foundation FellowshipThe National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is accepting applications for the 2023 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs. Eligibility and online application information are available on the Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs website.

 Through its program of fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

 Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card); individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) program;¹ Indigenous individuals exercising rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794; individuals granted Temporary Protected Status; asylees; and refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation;
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations); and
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in the U.S.

1Eligibility includes individuals with current status under the DACA Program, as well as individuals whose status may have lapsed but who continue to meet all the USCIS guidelines for DACA.

 Stipends:

  • Predoctoral: $27,000 per year for three years
  • Dissertation: $28,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral: $50,000 for one year

2023 HHMI Gilliam Fellowships – Nominations Open

After our first adviser-student selection in 2022, we are now requesting nominations for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s (HHMI) 2023 Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study via InfoReady. Please share this information with your graduate students and faculty as appropriate. The GT internal deadline is Sunday September 18, 2022 at 11:59pm.

Faculty and Administrators should use this form to submit nominations for adviser-student pairs who work in biomedical sciences, life sciences, or biological questions in related disciplines. This includes basic research on a variety of biological systems and at all scales including at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels. GT will be allowed to nominate a total of 3 adviser-student pairs to HHMI and GT nominees will be chosen by way of an internal review process.

In brief, prospective student fellows must be:

  • (i) U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, undocumented childhood arrivals, or undocumented individuals who have been granted temporary permission to stay in the US (DACA),
  • (ii) from populations excluded from and underrepresented in science because of ethnicity, race (Black or African American, Latinx or Hispanic American, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native, and from groups indigenous to the Pacific Island territories of the United States) or disability status (physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity),
  • (iii) in their second or third year of a PhD program, and/ or have at least two full years of study remaining, and have or will advance to candidacy by September 1, 2023.
