Asst Prof at Penn State Seeks Grad Student Participation

Hello!

My name is Dr. Catherine Berdanier. I am an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Penn State. I have been awarded an NSF CAREER grant to study the experiences of current engineering graduate students over time in an effort to understand graduate student attrition and persistence in engineering. We are collecting longitudinal data using text-message survey methods, following participants over time.

This research is conducted via very short surveys conducted via text message on your cell phone.  If you agree, and we select you for this study based on your screening criteria, you will receive very short surveys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Monday and Wednesday surveys will take approximately 30 seconds. Weekly, monthly, and end-of-term (December, May, August) surveys on Fridays will take 1 to 3 minutes.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete the online survey link below. The second page of the survey is the informed consent section, which includes more information regarding the study, including measures taken to protect confidentiality, and you will be able to download the full informed consent document.

[Link to Participant Interest Survey]

Consecutive participation will be rewarded with a $10 Amazon.com gift card each month of participation (missing fewer than 2 Monday/Wednesday surveys or 1 Friday survey each month). In addition, participants who complete each of the monthly surveys and semesterly surveys each term (December, May, August) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $50 Amazon.com gift cards at the end of each term.

Although you have the option to be removed from our study at any time, ideally participants would remain in the study for a year, at which point we will reach out to see if you would be interested in continuing your participation. Longitudinal data is extremely valuable to our research, so participants continuing in a second year will be entered into an additional drawing for an additional $50 Amazon.com gift card.

If you have any questions about the study or how the data will be used, feel free to contact me at our lab group email (ecrl@me.psu.edu) or my university email address (cgb9@psu.edu) and we will answer any questions you have.  This study has been approved by the Penn State IRB.

Thank you for considering participation in this important study.

Catherine Berdanier, PhD.

Three Tenure Track Asst. Professors at The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the UW

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Washington invites applications for three full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors working in the area of climate adaptation. We seek to form a diverse and inclusive faculty cohort that will advance and transform the research, teaching, and community engagement within SEFS and across the allied disciplines and scholars within the College of the Environment, the UW, and the multiple communities that we serve. Climate adaptation science is rapidly evolving.

The field of Climate Adaptation spans natural and social science disciplines and is focused on identifying historical, contemporary, and future approaches to guiding natural and human systems to adapt to ongoing and projected climate impacts.  Designing effective, socially just, and equitable climate adaptation strategies requires a deep understanding of physical, ecological, social, and biological implications of climate change, and the inequities it creates. Cultural and social priorities must be considered within adaptive strategies to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the lands in which people live, work and play.   These positions will work on creative, sustainable, and adaptive solutions to the multi-dimensional challenges of climate change through collaborative and convergent research, teaching, and service in alignment with the SEFS mission, vision and commitment to Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI). In partnership with all SEFS faculty, staff and students, they will fully support and advance our commitments to equity, inclusion, and access work, including diversification of our curricula, faculty expertise, and School-wide programming, and perform research that incorporates transdisciplinary approaches, Indigenous perspectives, engagement with stakeholders and underrepresented communities, and social justice and equity implications. Scholars who do not see themselves historically represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.
