Georgia A&WMA 2021 Scholarship Program

It’s scholarship time again! The Georgia Chapter of A&WMA is announcing its 2021 Scholarship Program.  This year the Georgia Chapter is planning on at least two $1000 scholarships.  For details concerning this year’s scholarships and how to apply, please see the attached document.  I have also included photos and information on last year’s winners.  You can find additional information about the Georgia Chapter of A&WMA at https://www.gaawma.org.  Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.

2020 Scholarship Recipients

The GA AWMA presented two $1000 scholarships for the 2020 calendar year.  The winners were:

Christina Kiessling who attends Georgia State University.  Her abstract was titled “Key to Waste Clean Up: Effective Plastic and Petroleum Degradation using Synergistic Mechanism of Microbial Co-Culture.”

Sarada Sripada who attends the University of Georgia.  Her abstract was titled “Sustainable Solid Acid Carbon Catalysts from Renewable Biomass for Fine and Specialty Chemical Synthesis.”

 

Asst Prof at Penn State Seeks Grad Student Participation

Hello!

My name is Dr. Catherine Berdanier. I am an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Penn State. I have been awarded an NSF CAREER grant to study the experiences of current engineering graduate students over time in an effort to understand graduate student attrition and persistence in engineering. We are collecting longitudinal data using text-message survey methods, following participants over time.

 This research is conducted via very short surveys conducted via text message on your cell phone.  If you agree, and we select you for this study based on your screening criteria, you will receive very short surveys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Monday and Wednesday surveys will take approximately 30 seconds. Weekly, monthly, and end-of-term (December, May, August) surveys on Fridays will take 1 to 3 minutes. 

If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete the online survey link below. The second page of the survey is the informed consent section, which includes more information regarding the study, including measures taken to protect confidentiality, and you will be able to download the full informed consent document.

Consecutive participation will be rewarded with a $10 Amazon.com gift card each month of participation (missing fewer than 2 Monday/Wednesday surveys or 1 Friday survey each month). In addition, participants who complete each of the monthly surveys and semesterly surveys each term (December, May, August) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $50 Amazon.com gift cards at the end of each term. 

Although you have the option to be removed from our study at any time, ideally participants would remain in the study for a year, at which point we will reach out to see if you would be interested in continuing your participation. Longitudinal data is extremely valuable to our research, so participants continuing in a second year will be entered into an additional drawing for an additional $50 Amazon.com gift card.

You or the faculty in your program are invited to nominate exceptional women graduate students for the P.E.O Scholar award. Please find the details below/attached.

2022-23 P.E.O. Scholar Award Application Announcement

 Award: P.E.O. (an organization that supports educational opportunities for women) will offer a $10,000 scholarship for advanced women graduate students to be awarded for 2022-2023.

Eligibility: Consideration of Scholar Award nominees is limited to women enrolled in a doctoral level degree program. Women conducting postdoctoral research are not eligible for the Scholar Award. U.S. or Canadian citizens; full-time graduate students who are women; must be within 2 years of completing the academic program and have at least one full academic year remaining; graduation should be between May 2023 and August 2024. The student must be interviewed (virtually this year) and nominated by local chapter of P.E.O. The scholarship is not need-based.

Deadline 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 30, 2021

Nomination: Graduate coordinators and/or faculty are invited to nominate exceptional women graduate students from their department. Nominators are asked to please scan documents together to create one PDF file, and have the name of the student as the file name when sending the nomination attachment. Nominations must be submitted as a single, complete PDF file directly to the P.E.O contact per immediately below.
