Information sessions for the TI:GER program for PhD students and candidates

The TI:GER program — Technology Innovation: Generating Economic Results — is now recruiting PhD students and PhD candidates for the next cohort beginning in January 2024.

Jonathan Giuliano is hosting two online information sessions for PhD candidates and students from noon to 12.30 pm on:

  • Wednesday 6 September
  • Wednesday 20 September

Please forward this email and the attached flyer, which provides additional details, to PhD students and candidates as you think appropriate. Students interested in attending must register here to receive the calendar invite with the session’s Zoom link a few days before the session.

The TI:GER program begins each January and runs for three terms (spring, fall, and spring). The program is 12 credit hours. These courses are eligible to fulfill requirements for a PhD candidate’s minor or for the PhD-MBA dual-degree program.

PhD candidates can bring to TI:GER their dissertation research, or they can bring a project from their lab, to explore its potential as a technology innovation; however, there is no requirement to do so. We welcome first-year and second-year PhD students because the TI:GER experience helps inform and guide their prospective dissertation research.

For more than 20 years, PhD alumni from the TI:GER program have pursued careers not only in academia but also in elite consultancies, corporate innovation, corporate R&D, technology-product management, and entrepreneurial ventures, including their own startups. The TI:GER website presents more than 20 testimonials from TI:GER Ph.D. alumni in the TI:GER Network

PhD students and candidates team up with MBA students from Scheller College (for all three terms) to learn technology innovation from multiple perspectives critical to commercial application of fundamental research in science and engineering.

TI:GER PhD students and candidates are also embedded with Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) ventures for the final term. CDL ventures are science-based, massively scalable, early-stage ventures. Here’s more information on CDL-Atlanta.

Please encourage PhD students and candidates you think would benefit from TI:GER to attend the information session.

Should you have questions, please Jonathan Giuliano or Simona Spagnoli, TI:GER communications manager.

Spelman/GT Climate Science, Solutions and Justice Workshop

My name is Skylar Lama and I am a PhD student in Ocean Science and Engineering with EAS as my home department. I am part of a group of graduate students who are organizing a workshop for undergraduates on climate science, solutions, and justice at Spelman College this September. Our goal of this workshop is to expose undergraduate students to the different disciplines within climate science and the many career opportunities that such a field provides.

We are looking for graduate students from GT to possibly present a poster, a talk, or help in round table discussions for any of the workshop days. As the chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department I was wondering if you would be willing to pass on a flyer as well the google form for abstract submissions to the CEE graduate student list serve.

I have attached the flyer here as well as the google form, please let me know if you have any questions.

NEXTPROF Nexus 2022 in Berkeley, CA, September 27-30: Deadline to Apply or Nominate Students is June 15

On September 27-30, 2022, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and Georgia Tech will co-host the 2022 NextProf Nexus future faculty workshop on Berkeley’s campus.

This program aims to diversify the engineering professoriate by bringing together 40+ senior-level Ph.D. students, postdocs, and early career scientists and researchers from across the country for an intensive 3-day workshop about becoming a faculty member.

The 2022 NextProf Nexus future faculty workshop is designed to encourage people in traditionally underrepresented U.S. demographic groups to seek academic careers. It is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of any ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ability, veteran status, socio-economic status, first generation to college status, nation of origin, and/or religion.

Please forward this announcement to candidates and encourage them to apply; you may also nominate them directly here. We would also appreciate it if you could share this announcement with colleagues from other institutions and organizations that share our mission.

We are planning on having the workshop in-person at this time. However, the well-being of our community and guests is our top priority. We will continue to monitor safety guidelines for group gatherings related to COVID-19 and will keep applicants and participants informed of any changes to the format of the workshop. For up-to-date information on the workshop format, please visit our website.
