Caltech Faculty Opening

The Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. We are seeking highly qualified candidates committed to a career in teaching, mentoring and research excellence in the broad area of aerospace. We have particular strategic needs in solid mechanics, reacting/high-speed flows, and autonomy/robotics for aerospace, but we are conducting a broad search spanning all areas of aerospace. It is anticipated that a successful candidate would collaborate broadly with investigators both within and beyond the Engineering and Applied Science Division, as well as in centers at Caltech including, for example, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies, the Center for Quantum Precision Measurement, and the Resnick Sustainability Institute. The appointment is contingent upon completion of the Ph.D. degree in an appropriate engineering or science related discipline.

Applications should be completed online by December 15, 2023; however, the review of applications will begin immediately upon receipt.

Caltech and the Engineering and Applied Science Division value and have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We especially seek to attract promising scholars with backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in STEM fields. Successful candidates for this position are also expected to demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service.

Interested candidates should apply online. Applications should include:

1.    a brief essay (no more than 4 pages) describing research goals and plans and how these are supported by previous academic qualifications and professional experiences; and the value they will bring to the Institute’s curricula as well as GALCIT’s research program.

2.    a 1-2 page teaching statement, including approach to and philosophy of teaching.

3.    a 1-2 page diversity and inclusion statement that discusses past and/or anticipated contributions to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the areas of research, teaching, and/or outreach.

4.    a curriculum vitae.

5.    a list of papers published and submitted with refereed papers indicated.

6.    the names and email addresses of at least four reference letter writers.

Questions about the application process may be directed to galcit-search@caltech.edu.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Information sessions for the TI:GER program for PhD students and candidates

The TI:GER program — Technology Innovation: Generating Economic Results — is now recruiting PhD students and PhD candidates for the next cohort beginning in January 2024.

Jonathan Giuliano is hosting two online information sessions for PhD candidates and students from noon to 12.30 pm on:

  • Wednesday 6 September
  • Wednesday 20 September

Please forward this email and the attached flyer, which provides additional details, to PhD students and candidates as you think appropriate. Students interested in attending must register here to receive the calendar invite with the session’s Zoom link a few days before the session.

The TI:GER program begins each January and runs for three terms (spring, fall, and spring). The program is 12 credit hours. These courses are eligible to fulfill requirements for a PhD candidate’s minor or for the PhD-MBA dual-degree program.

PhD candidates can bring to TI:GER their dissertation research, or they can bring a project from their lab, to explore its potential as a technology innovation; however, there is no requirement to do so. We welcome first-year and second-year PhD students because the TI:GER experience helps inform and guide their prospective dissertation research.

For more than 20 years, PhD alumni from the TI:GER program have pursued careers not only in academia but also in elite consultancies, corporate innovation, corporate R&D, technology-product management, and entrepreneurial ventures, including their own startups. The TI:GER website presents more than 20 testimonials from TI:GER Ph.D. alumni in the TI:GER Network

PhD students and candidates team up with MBA students from Scheller College (for all three terms) to learn technology innovation from multiple perspectives critical to commercial application of fundamental research in science and engineering.

TI:GER PhD students and candidates are also embedded with Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) ventures for the final term. CDL ventures are science-based, massively scalable, early-stage ventures. Here’s more information on CDL-Atlanta.

Please encourage PhD students and candidates you think would benefit from TI:GER to attend the information session.

Should you have questions, please Jonathan Giuliano or Simona Spagnoli, TI:GER communications manager.
