LGBTQIA Resource Center Student Relief Fund

Over the past year, the Georgia Tech LGBTQIA Resource Center and Lavender Alumni (GTLA) have collaborated on a Student Emergency Fund specifically designated to meet the unique needs of LGBTQIA students. This fund will support Tech’s student community with mini-grants to cover unexpected expenses such as housing, food, and medical support.  

The Center has launched a campaign for fund donations to run June 15 – July 15. Its goal is to raise $10,000 or create an endowment to ensure a consistent availability of funding for this project.

Management of Technology Certificate Program

The Management of Technology (MoT) Certificate is awarded by the Scheller College of Business. The program provides a strong foundation of managerial decision-making focused on firms driven by innovations in science and technology. A survey of recipients reported that the MoT Certificate enhanced job prospects as well as their overall capability and job performance.

 

Program Overview

The MoT Certificate is designed to serve Georgia Tech graduate students (MBA and non-MBA) who recognize the need to learn how to transfer technical and scientific expertise into innovations that impact the competitive marketplace. After completing the certificate, a student will have the multidisciplinary perspective necessary to meet the challenges faced by established firms as well as start-ups operating in dynamic and uncertain environments.

 

Program Requirements

The certificate is awarded to recipients of graduate degrees from Georgia Tech who satisfy program requirements. A student who earns the MoT Certificate completes a required course (MGT-ISyE 6772) that presents a multidisciplinary view of innovation and technology management. Additionally, a student develops an individualized program of study by selecting three electives from an approved list. The electives include analysis of emerging technologies, business process analysis and design, business strategies for sustainability, collaborative product development, e-commerce, project management, supply chain modeling, and technology ventures.

ExxonMobil LOFT Fellowship

ExxonMobil Corporation, the largest publicly traded international energy company, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowship opportunities in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for Hispanic college students. Through HHF’s Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) program, ExxonMobil seeks to nurture motivated college students across the country, with a passion for Engineering and Science.

Selected students will be exposed to a top-quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with an ExxonMobil professional to learn how their knowledge and skills are applied in a corporate setting.

Fellowship Components
The Fellowship consists of five 1-hour meetings with a mentor (virtual or in person), participation in the Harvard-certified ExxonMobil mentee program (on-line), an exclusive curriculum to introduce Fellows to ExxonMobil and career opportunities, and a $1,000 educational grant. In addition, there exists the possibility to interview for ExxonMobil positions (internships/full-time) upon successful completion of the Fellowship.

Fellowship Requirements
This opportunity is highly competitive and open to rising sophomores, juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students  attending a 4-year college or university.
Fellowship applicants with the following majors will be given priority:

·            Chemical Engineering

·            Computer Engineering

·            Electrical Engineering

·            Geoscience

·            Material Science and Engineering

·            Mechanical Engineering


Applicants with these majors will be considered also: Chemistry, Computer Science Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Petroleum Engineering, and Physics.

·            Must plan to pursue a career in the fields/majors listed above

·            Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher

The department also offers a Master of Science degree program in Civil Engineering. State-of-the art equipment, instruments and advanced software are employed in both classroom and laboratory/field settings to prepare students to be productive technical professionals upon graduation.

Position Description. The desired areas of specialization for the position include teaching engineering and construction graphics, surveying, project management, and civil engineering and construction finance. Reporting to the Department Chair, visiting instructors normally teach 15 credit hours per semester and hold regular office hours. All visiting positions are non-tenure track. The appointment is for Fall 2021 – Spring 2022 with the possibility of a one-year extension pending funding and satisfactory performance. The extension year would be a terminal year, without exception.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field by August 1, 2021with at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • The technical ability to teach engineering/construction graphics, surveying, and project management/finance
  • A willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field by August 1, 2021
  • Experience with online instruction at the university level
  • Relevant industry/professional experience

Mini Materials-Tech Zoom Conference on April 20th – Tire Recycling Problem Statement

We’re hosting a mini-zoom conference on April 20th.  This month’s focus is an industry problem statement from America’s leading tire manufacturer: they want to find a way to help recycle the ~1 billion tires that are thrown away every year around the world.

We’re inviting anyone who might be doing research even semi-related to attend: from materials tech to synthetic biology, the right set of solutions can often come from unexpected places.

In Fall 2020, CEEatGT was awarded a $1M grant by the National Science Foundation to enhance the curriculum and sense of belonging of undergraduates in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (More at: https://ce.gatech.edu/news/ceeatgt-awarded-1-million-educational-grant).  This exciting and timely initiative will develop a suite of vertically-integrated courses, highly interactive and problem-based, around grand challenges facing our infrastructure, environment and society – with computational and team development, and reflective learning.  RED Graduate Fellows will participate in capacity building via seminars and workshops and support CEEatGT faculty in developing and piloting new courses, with a commitment of approximately 1 hour per week.  The RED Graduate Fellowship will be particularly of interest to Ph.D. students who are interested in pursuing an academic career after obtaining their degrees.  RED Graduate Fellows will receive a $1,000 stipend annually to participate in the Initiative.

The right candidates will be mentored and trained by veteran engineers with extensive national and international experience. 

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • B.S. degree (M.S. degree is preferred) in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering or construction

  • Related experience with a consulting engineering firm and knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices is a plus

Geotechnical Project Manager (Multiple Positions) – Kennesaw, Georgia, & Tampa, Florida 

Job Description Summary 

The successful Geotechnical Project Manager will complement our existing successful engineering team and assist in managing existing projects. The ideal candidate must have at least 5-15+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing consulting environment, and the ability to provide technical support on geotechnical and construction projects. This position requires technical competence and a positive attitude and an ability to communicate effectively with clients, other engineers and junior staff. Experience with project management is required. Strong analytical and computer skills are highly desirable in areas including slope stability analysis, retaining wall analysis, bearing capacity analysis, settlement analysis, pile design, and foundation design. A Master’s degree from an accredited college/university is highly desirable with a major in civil/geotechnical engineering. Professional Registration (PE) in the state of Georgia is a must with the ability to obtain registration in other states including the state of Florida within 6 months. Advanced knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and other engineering-related software is required. Excellent communication skills and strong business acumen are required for success and advancements. GIS/CADD Technician- Kennesaw, Georgia 

Job Description Summary 

We are looking for an experienced GIS/CADD technician to add to our successful team. This GIS/CADD Technician will be led by Project Managers on a team consisting of multi-discipline design engineers focused on the production of design phase deliverables including reports, design manuals, plans and profiles, sections, details and specifications. The CADD technician must work well in a team environment, be proficient in AutoCAD/GIS and have strong communication skills. 

  • Proficient in AutoCAD to design 2D figures and diagrams to be used as deliverables in project reports. Common figures and diagrams include project location maps, cross-sections, proposed construction plans and soil profile fences. However, project-specific requests are to be expected
  • Manage prioritization of activities to meet multiple project timeline requirements
  • Coordination with Project Engineers and Field Personnel
  • Project organization is a must
  • Self-check deliverables to avoid unnecessary revisions
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in design or workflow
  • Keep deliverables consistent from project to project
  • Willingness to learn gINT (basic data entry geotechnical software)

  • The ability to incorporate ArcGIS would be a plus
