Position Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at San José State University (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broad area of Geomatics. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Applicants must also have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a background in Geomatics or a Ph.D. in Geomatics.

Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching in classroom and laboratory settings using a variety of pedagogical techniques and technological tools to reach a diverse population. They must demonstrate an ability to create a sustainable research program in support of their retention, tenure, and promotion. The position requires excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. The candidate’s principal instructional responsibilities will be in surveying and drafting courses. An ability to teach in other civil engineering areas and the ability to obtain a professional license are desirable.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at San José State University offers an ABET-accredited BS-Civil Engineering program and a MS-Civil Engineering program that is designed for working professionals. Our curriculum supports six core Civil Engineering disciplines and allows students to gain a wide breadth of knowledge in Civil Engineering. Our BS program includes coursework that give students opportunity to develop professional skills, including those in professional communication, inclusive engagement, and design. The program is supplemented with coursework and extracurricular opportunities that are designed to prepare students for professional licensure and engineering practice. The department utilizes many high-impact practices to support student success including active learning pedagogies, early introduction to discipline courses, and student engagement opportunities. Classroom instruction is complemented with many hands-on laboratory experiences, a strong culture of student club participation across disciplines, and award-winning faculty with many years of academic and industry experience. Our MS program is designed for working professionals and is a professional program that focuses on graduating engineers with excellent skills required to enter industry ready to contribute. Research opportunities are available to all students in the department and offer a wide variety of experiences.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have the necessary background to support the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department’s ABET-Accredited BSCE program and the professional MSCE program. Candidates who do not possess the requisite BS and Ph.D. degrees will not be considered for the position. Candidates must:

• Have a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
• Have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a background in Geomatics or a Ph.D. in Geomatics, or demonstrate an ability to complete the necessary degree by August 2022.
• Have excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate an ability to redesign and teach a modern curriculum that meets industry and accreditation standards in Geomatics (namely GIS, computer and manual drafting, and surveying) using modern civil engineering tools that will prepare students for professional licensure and to enter industry
• Demonstrate an ability to establish a sustainable research program that results in published peer-reviewed papers and professional presentations.
• Express a commitment to service that supports student success, as well as the department, college and university operations.
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.


Preferred Qualifications

• Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
• Established teaching record in courses related to surveying, drafting, and/or GIS.
• Demonstrate an ability to establish an externally funded research program.
• Ability to become professionally licensed support.
• Ability to teach in a variety of CE disciplines.
• Have an established record of participation in professional development opportunities that support student success through inclusive pedagogies, advising/mentoring a diverse student population, etc.

Key Responsibilities

Providing quality education is a top priority for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Candidates must support student success for a diverse population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advising. In addition to teaching engineering courses, faculty members in the department are expected to develop curricula and establish a sustainable research program that results in externally funded research projects and peer-reviewed papers. Faculty members advise students and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Candidates will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments. They must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Assistant/Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at Montana State

The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Engineering. CE offers BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The College of Engineering offers a PhD degree in Engineering with an Environmental Engineering option. Research opportunities within the Environmental Engineering program are enhanced through collaboration with research centers and institutes including:

  • the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center dedicated to multidisciplinary research, education, and technology transfer related to problems and opportunities associated with microbial biofilms.
  • The Energy Research Institute (ERI) involves faculty across MSU in collaborative efforts to encourage, develop and manage energy-related research at MSU
  • the Montana Engineering Education Research Center (MEERC) includes faculty throughout MSU in transforming engineering through interdisciplinary, empirical research

The Environmental Engineering program has recently received a National Science Foundation Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (NSF RED) grant to develop an integrated, project based, collaboratively taught curriculum that will prepare students to meet the grand challenges of the future. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or closely related field;

  4. Ability to develop an externally funded research program including evidence of scholarly achievements;
  5. For appointment at the Associate level, demonstrated prior performance commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    1. Academic and/or professional experience;
    2. Research experience in environmental engineering topics that include but are not limited to microbial and chemical processes in water supply and wastewater systems, sustainable systems, environmental biotechnology, engineering education or other emerging environmental issues.
    3. Experience with or demonstrated ability to assume a leadership role in Environmental Engineering undergraduate and graduate program development.
    4. Ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer within five years from date of employment is desired.

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina
State University (NCSU) expects to fill a position in the area of Structural Engineering and
Mechanics. We seek candidates in the area of innovative structural systems and materials with
strong domain expertise who have a demonstrated interest in working with colleagues within other
areas of civil engineering (and/or across other disciplines) to be responsive to emerging research
questions aimed at the betterment of civil infrastructure.

Successful candidates should be able to participate in multidisciplinary initiatives to support the
