Assistant/Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at Montana State

The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Engineering. CE offers BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The College of Engineering offers a PhD degree in Engineering with an Environmental Engineering option. Research opportunities within the Environmental Engineering program are enhanced through collaboration with research centers and institutes including:

  • the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center dedicated to multidisciplinary research, education, and technology transfer related to problems and opportunities associated with microbial biofilms.
  • The Energy Research Institute (ERI) involves faculty across MSU in collaborative efforts to encourage, develop and manage energy-related research at MSU
  • the Montana Engineering Education Research Center (MEERC) includes faculty throughout MSU in transforming engineering through interdisciplinary, empirical research

The Environmental Engineering program has recently received a National Science Foundation Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (NSF RED) grant to develop an integrated, project based, collaboratively taught curriculum that will prepare students to meet the grand challenges of the future. Candidates will be expected to actively participate in this transformational opportunity.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruction and advising of undergraduate students in the Environmental and Civil Engineering curriculum and graduate students in Environmental Engineering;
  • Participation, promotion and further development of the Environmental Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • Fully participate in the NSF RED project to transform Environmental Engineering education at MSU;
  • Development of a nationally-recognized, externally-funded research program;
  • Production of scholarly works and;
  • Participation in professional/service/outreach activities.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  1. PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or closely related field;
  2. Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills;
  3. Ability to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate teaching missions of the department;
  4. Ability to develop an externally funded research program including evidence of scholarly achievements;
  5. For appointment at the Associate level, demonstrated prior performance commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    1. Academic and/or professional experience;
    2. Research experience in environmental engineering topics that include but are not limited to microbial and chemical processes in water supply and wastewater systems, sustainable systems, environmental biotechnology, engineering education or other emerging environmental issues.
    3. Experience with or demonstrated ability to assume a leadership role in Environmental Engineering undergraduate and graduate program development.
    4. Ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer within five years from date of employment is desired.
