DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION 2022

On Novel Materials for Future Infrastructure Systems and the Constructed Environment

https://cee.rice.edu/

The Rice University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position in the area of innovative materials for future built environments and engineered systems. Applicants will find a vibrant research and teaching community eager to transform materials research into societal benefits through bold initiatives, including the Welch Institute for Advanced Materials, Rice’s Quantum Initiative, the ERC on Nanotechnology‐Enabled Water treatment (NEWT), Rice’s Data Science Initiative, the Baker Institute for Public Policy, the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, and the SSPEED center on storms, impacts and their mitigation.

To exploit these opportunities, we seek candidates with deep foundational expertise in new multi‐ functional, multi‐scale, and coupled‐physics materials for infrastructure systems, and an interest in research across disciplines that develops models or uses materials for the re‐invention of urban and rural constructed environments at risk. Areas of interest include: (1) Theoretical and AI‐assisted discovery of materials with new or improved capabilities in morphology, constructability, durability, sensing, responsiveness and adaptation; (2) Design and experimental/computational verification of materials with self‐healing abilities, superior strength and toughness, bio‐inspired functions, and optimal topologies constrained by combinatorial, economic, environmental, and social equity implications; (3) Atomistic quantum‐mechanical modeling, molecular dynamics, and continuum theories of materials, from nano‐ to macro‐scales; (4) Physics‐guided and explainable AI for modeling and design of construction materials experiencing uncertain demands, fatigue, fracture, radiation, and resilience loss.

Expectations: Successful candidates are expected to establish a rigorous, externally funded research program, have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, develop core undergraduate and graduate courses within their area of expertise, collaborate with faculty in diverse disciplines, and be involved in service to the university and the broader scientific community. Furthermore, the successful candidate will advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
