flyer for FFJSA
The future faculty team in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides workshops and individual consultations to assist graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in their academic career development. The annual job search series features workshops on academic packet preparation in the summer and fall semesters followed by interviewing and job talk preparation in the spring term.

Fall 2021 Future Faculty Job Search Academy: Preparing your application packet
Tuesday, September 9 through Friday, October 1, 2021

Participants in this three-week, intensive working group will create their job search strategy and craft drafts of the entire job search packet including CV, cover letter, teaching statement, research statement, and diversity statement. Designed in a flipped workshop format, participants will use asynchronous materials to craft a draft of each statement prior to participating in the remote synchronous working sessions.

How will it work?

The flipped design of this workshop series combines asynchronous independent preparation with synchronous remote workshops. Each week, you will work independently through the asynchronous materials for an introduction to the topic and then, at the end of the week, you will join the synchronous workshop led by CTL experts to address common challenges experienced during the process. You can ask questions to the group discussion board throughout the workshop series via the Microsoft Teams channel.

What is the schedule?

Week 1: Kick-off your Job Search

  • Attend: FFJSA Kick-off | Thursday, September 9 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm ET
  • Use asynchronous materials to prepare for next week’s workshops

Week 2: Preparing your CV and Cover Letter

  • Use asynchronous materials to prepare for Thursday and Friday workshops
  • Attend: Cover Letter | Thursday, September 16| 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Attend: CV | Friday, September 17 | 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Week 3: Preparing your Research and Teaching Statements

  • Use asynchronous materials to prepare for Thursday and Friday workshops
  • Attend: Research Statement | Thursday, September 23 | 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Attend: Teaching Statement | Friday, September 24 | 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Week 4: Preparing your Diversity Statement and Closing Session

  • Use asynchronous materials to prepare for Thursday and Friday workshops
  • Attend: Diversity Statement | Thursday, September 30 | 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Attend: Faculty Panel and Closing Session | Friday, October 1 | 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

What if I cannot attend the workshops?

Since the synchronous meetings are designed to be interactive working sessions rather than presentations, you will receive greater benefit from attending the remote workshops live. However, we recognize that schedule conflicts will arise and so we will post recordings of all workshops in the appropriate Teams channel.

Why should I join this Academy?

Embarking on an academic job search is challenging and can feel particularly isolating. This program is intended to bridge that gap, bringing you in closer ongoing contact with both your peers and CTL advisors. The Academy will ensure you make time to prepare for the most successful academic job search.

How do I join?

Complete the application form by Tuesday, September 7 at 11:59pm. Once your application is received, you will be added to the Fall 2021 Future Faculty Job Search Academy on Microsoft Teams. Contact Dr. Kate Williams with questions at kate.williams@gatech.edu.
